Welcome to Ms. White's 6th grade Langage Arts website!

ROAR! Hello little lions! I am so glad you are here. Poke around and find different resources you can use to be successful in my class.

Agenda

Week 1: Aug. 19-23

Monday: No School

Tuesday: Camp Turning Points and Open House - feel free to bring supplies to Open House if you don't want to lug them around on the first day of school.

Wednesday: FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL...unfortunately Language Arts classes get to go over the Norman Public School handbook...sorry, but it may be boring.

Thursday: Go over classroom policies and procedures. Finish up the Norman handbook.

Friday: We get to go on our first trip to the library. If you have a fun book from home you are already reading, please bring it with you on Friday.

Week 3: Sept 3

Hello parents and guardians!

We had a great day yesterday in class as we talked about two different ways to help us summarize: Somebody-Wanted-But-So and a GIST. We also talked allusions...those little references to other stories. The kids did great as we read "The Downfall of an Egg", a tragic story of Humpty Dumpty. We even started using text evidence to support our answers. All in all, a great Friday.

This next week should be equally as great if not greater. Now, you all have some homework over the weekend...to sign your child's reading log to show he or she read.

On Tuesday, we are going to check reading logs, start Lesson 2 of the Vocabulary Workbook, and start getting our classroom binders organized. We are going to create tabs for the binders so that we can a place for all our Language Arts papers. We are going to have a Graded Work tab, a Spelling tab, and a Notes tab. If your child has leftover tabs from another class supplies, he or she can certainly bring them to class. Otherwise, we'll use my construction paper to make dividers. I really want the kids to buy in to getting organized, so we'll spend half of class decorating these tabs as well.

On Wednesday, we have big things planned. First of all, if you wanted to order a book from the Scholastic order form that I sent home last week, I will be collecting the last of the orders on Wednesday. You can also order online at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our classroom code is GCM6F. After I collect the book orders, then we will go to the library for our set of Library Games called SURVIVOR MAKTABA. Your kiddos will be divided into teams to compete in our library challenges once a week for about five weeks. Whoot!

On Thursday, I am going to lecture over the elements of a plot and a story. Students will have a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to complete after I finish my lecture to see if they were paying attention.

On Friday, we will start reading the short story "Dragon, Dragon" out of our textbook.

In other news, your child should have received a flyer about our upcoming Picture Day on September 13. Sometime next week, the money order forms will be sent home. Be looking for them.

Sincerely,

Ms. White

Week 4: Sept. 9

Monday - Finish reading "Dragon, Dragon". We will chart out the skeletal plot of the story and write a GIST. Homework: get the reading log signed by a parent...remember each week students should have 140 minutes logged.

Tuesday - Reading log will be due on Thursday since I will be in a professional development training. While I am gone, students will complete Lesson 3 of their Vocabulary workbook and find text evidence to support that the dragon from "Dragon, Dragon" was a problem.

Wednesday - We will go to SURVIVOR MAKTABA: dictionaries and thesauri.

Thursday - Reading log, vocabulary workbook, and text evidence worksheet are due. We will start writing a friendly letter to the king about the dragon problem the village has been facing in "Dragon, Dragon".

Friday - We will finish our personal letters.

Note: If you ordered a book from the Scholastic book order, the books should be arriving on Wednesday or Thursday this week. :)
